Last year, at DEF CON 26, my wife Sunfire and I debuted our Wifi Project in the Jean Vest, fitting the declared 80s theme of DEF CON 26. It got a lot of attention that year and this year, for DEF CON 27, I decided to keep the project going, but to change the project up in style and portability.
Right off the bat, I decided to condense the project down from a separate display and Raspberry Pi disjointed as a distance of jumpers to a display affixed to the Pi’s GPIO via a small protoboard. I used some inner ethernet pair wires to solder the traces from the GPIO to the display and affixed the edge of the display to the USB using hot glue. Initially, I intended to wear this around my neck as a badge, is as such self deco is pretty typical at DEF CON.
A few days before leaving for the conference, however, I learned about the HARD HAT contest, and almost magically found a hard hat at a local Goodwill store three days before leaving for the conference. ( STORY TO BE ADDED LATER) The Wifi Project was baked into my HardHat for DEF CON 27.
This year, the DEF CON was spread between the Flamigo, Ballys, Paris, and Planet Hollywood, giving it a larger footprint than last year. I never got a chance to even make it to the Flamingo, and after last year’s readings and spurious traffic from Wireless Village, I limited the amount of time I spent around the Wireless Village. We also stayed in a hotel outside of the Caesar’s group for the majority of the conference, and I spent several hours Volunteering at The Diana Initiative, during which the project was not run.
One difference to recording vs last year is that the project was run at a few parties including the arcade party and the performance by Rabbit In the Moon. The project did not record during any parties last year. Also, unlike last year, we were not physically present for the closing ceremonies although we were at the “Paris Bottleneck” collecting traffic just before the closing ceremonies started.
I also was forced to re-write the output script and while the new script has the actual company name in the wireshark manufacturer database, it’s not as clean a presentation. I took some time to clean it up, but you may find some of the entries are redundant due to how the manuf file is broken down. Also, many Chinese companies use very long names, and you’ll find the data spilled over onto the next line. I’m sure folks will still find it informative.
All things considered the results are still impressive, and I had fun doing it.
